Periodontal Therapy

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease can destroy gum tissue and teeth and lead to stroke, heart attack, and pregnancy complications. With time, the disease will spread, damaging your gums, teeth, and bone within the mouth. Your overall well being will also be at risk due to inadvertent ingestion of toxins hiding in your mouth. It is important to know about periodontal therapy.

As most tooth loss cases in adults are attributed to gum disease, you need to take action the minute you notice any symptom of periodontal disease, such as swollen or bleeding gums. This is especially true if you have not been regularly getting your teeth checked, missing out on the chance to detect, treat, and reverse gum disease earlier. Contact Dr. Elizabeth Kilpatrick-Fox’s dental office in Swedesboro and let us assess your condition to determine if periodontal therapy is the right treatment for you.

Dr. Elizabeth Kilpatrick-Fox provides periodontal therapy to her patients. The therapy is extremely popular due to the following proven benefits.

  • Deep Dental Cleaning – Periodontal therapy offers a more intensive form of teeth cleaning to remove bacteria and restore the health of your mouth and gums. It is also effective in destroying pockets of bacteria, preventing further damage.
  • Effective Disease Prevention – Periodontal therapy can prevent other diseases. In fact, this treatment can reduce bacteria in your mouth, allowing you to gain control over your oral hygiene.
  • Better Functionality – In some cases, this treatment can restore functionality to different parts of your mouth by strengthening your teeth and gums. After all, you will not be burdened by the severe and uncomfortable pain that accompanies gum disease.

The Procedures for Periodontal Therapy

At Dr. Elizabeth Kilpatrick-Fox’s office, we provide two types of periodontal therapies. Surgical and non-surgical.
Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy

We recommend three procedures for patients who do not require extensive periodontal therapy:

  • Tooth Cleaning – Getting professional tooth cleaning at regular intervals can eliminate the possibility of gum disease as your dentist will tell you how to prevent and identify the symptoms of this disease early on to provide the right treatment.
  • Scaling and Root Planing – This procedure is easily done with a local anesthetic to ensure the patient’s total comfort. Scaling and root planing is the process used to remove the infection, bacterial debris and plaque from below and around the gum line. This procedure diminishes inflammation and results in a cleaner and smoother area at the bottom of the teeth. Localized antibiotics are sometimes applied below the gum line to reduce inflammation and get rid of the bacteria.
  • Night Guards and Bite Guards – Appliances like night guards and bite guards are helpful in adjusting your bite and preventing other self-harming tendencies like teeth grinding which may contribute to periodontal disorders.

Surgical Periodontal Therapy

For severe cases of periodontal disease, Dr. Fox may recommend any of the following procedures:

  • Pocket Reduction Surgery – Recommended for patients who may not benefit from deep cleaning, this treatment is used to reduce the space between the gums and teeth so that bacterial plaque does not collect there.
  • Tissue and Bone Grafting Surgery – Dentists recommend this type of therapy before placing implants to ensure the success of this restoration procedure.
  • Regenerative Surgery and Ridge Augmentation – These procedures create and build up soft and hard tissue. It takes care of pockets and is important for your dental health.
  • Gum Reduction and Crown Lengthening Surgeries – We recommend these treatments to get rid of excessive gums and lengthen your existing teeth. Though used for cosmetic purposes, it can be used to protect you from periodontal disease.
